Story (★★★☆☆)
✔️ Engaging horror narrative that keeps me hooked
✔️ Allusions of topics like the Chinese folklore and superstitions
❌ Translations are rather rough around the edges
Gameplay (★★☆☆☆)
✔️ Challenging puzzles
✔️ Inventory function (5 available slots)
❌ Memorisation is KEY
❌ Solving the increasingly onerous puzzles is anything but straightforward
❌ A lack of directions
❌ Hints require coins (through watching ads or real money purchase)
Graphics (★★★★☆)
✔️ Decent 2D digital art style
✔️ Dark paranormal themes with hints of eerie vibe
Audio (★★★★☆)
✔️ Subtle and unobtrusive
✔️ Creepily immersive soundscape
Verdict (★★★★★★☆☆☆☆)
As a fan of horror games, Paper Bride didn’t quite nail it. The challenge of solving memory-filled puzzles does indeed offer a sense of accomplishment but doesn’t seem to go far. At times, the game appears as though it’s trying to be too clever for its own good.
Still, if you’re in it for the love of puzzles and horror genre, there’re still tons to be admired here. What’s more, the captivating narrative is more than sufficient to make up for its mind-boggling puzzles.
