Marvel Strike Force: Squad RPG: An Action-Packed Marvel RPG

Translate
I've always been a hardcore fan of RPG games with gacha rolling elements. You honestly could call me obsessed. It's that satisfying feeling of getting the character I've wanted for so long that keeps me playing—which leads me to sadly spend too much money. But where do we draw the line between playing to have fun and paying money to win in games? The superhero turn-based title Marvel Strike Force: Squad RPG is a prime example of a game that pushes against that already thin line.
Marvel Strike Force: Squad RPG is a free-to-play, turn-based RPG centered around gacha rolling for characters or playing to collect them much more slowly. The entire gameplay is to collect characters, match compositions, and assemble a five-man squad to combat your enemies across the Marvel universe.

Before talking about the endless things to do in Marvel Strike Force, it's essential to understand that this game is pretty hardcore and long-term for most gamers. It's one of those titles that require players to duel daily or complete challenges to acquire weekly rewards. It's definitely fun on its own, but don't go jumping in thinking that you can quickly get Thanos or Phoenix right away; it'll take a long time before that happens, as is the case for most gacha-type games.
It all starts with Ultimus, an interdimensional threat to all Earths. Beginning players will first know of his existence in the initial campaign, "Heroes Assemble," wherein characters are taken under control by Ultimus. The following campaign, "Villains United," sees both sides agreeing to let bygones be bygones temporarily, as a more significant threat journeys toward Earth threatening to end the human race.
The story of the ultimate big bad guy who wants to end all life is something I’ve seen plenty of times before, both in and out of the Marvel universe, but having superheroes and supervillains team up adds a fun twist to the happenings. I don’t think I’ve ever played a superhero game that overturns the classic back-and-forth struggle between good and evil, and it worked to pull me in.

The story plays out in a pretty straightforward manner. There are seven campaigns, each with its own chapters and stages. Heroes Assemble features six chapters, each of which has a variety of very different stages. Completing each stage rewards resources, experience, gold, and character tokens that players can put together to hire new heroes or villains.

Despite being relatively clear, each stage gets more difficult as you move forward. To surpass levels, you'll need to get stronger through leveling characters, upgrading equipment, and enhancing abilities. Each upgrade requires materials that must be collected by grinding through missions.
If you’ve played a game with gacha rolling mechanics before, then you no doubt completely understand how frustrating it is to not get the characters you badly need. Marvel Strike Force is no different in that regard. The number of tokens I received through stages and other achievements simply wasn’t enough. It would take me hours of playing to just get my first actual hero besides the ones provided at the start of the campaign to join my squad, which wasn’t fun at all. When playing Marvel Strike Force, I found it best to just level and enhance whatever characters I had as far as they could progress, and then I stuck with them until a new character finally arrived.

Beyond the campaign, Marvel Strike Force rotates through a bevy of PvE modes, including Events, Challenges, Blitz, Dark Dimension, and Cosmic Crucible. These PvE activities reward experience, gold, gear, and unique characters, but you'll need to reach a higher level to play some of these modes.
If you prefer PvP, you can fight against other players in a number of modes, including Arena, Real-Time Arena, and Alliance War, which is essentially a guild-versus-guild battle. Playing these modes regularly will unlock rewards—some large, some small—over time and through the completion of certain specific milestones.

Marvel Strike Force really didn't live up to my expectations for a free-to-play title. Some elements impressed me, like each character having their own abilities, sound effects, and display art or customizable skins. The game also boasts a massive roster of tons of characters from the Marvel universe, and some of the activities are enjoyable enough. But my motivation to play was devastated by the realization that I'd have to pay money just to get somewhere in the near future.
Marvel Strike Force purposefully places a more significant emphasis on paying to collect characters than on actually playing the game. Because of the large gap between experienced players and beginners, climbing to a decent progress level could easily take months. My interest was almost immediately drained when I saw how slow and excruciating the climb towards being strong enough to "enjoy the game" would be. I’ve enjoyed plenty of games that focus on gacha rolling in my time, but Marvel Strike Force is definitely best left to devoted enthusiasts that enjoy that struggle to the top.
