The Best Free-To-Play Fighting Game I've Ever Played on PC and Console
I'm not too particularly interested in playing fighting games. There's nothing wrong or dissuading about them. It's just not my cup of tea. Do I know why it's not? No. It's a little embarrassing to admit, but I've never played Street Fighter, Tekken, or Mortal Kombat. Isn't that crazy? Coming from someone who's spent probably fifty percent of his life playing video games, you'd think I'd stumble across one of these legendary titles or a fighting game at the very least. Well, no. Luckily, that all changed last week after coming across MultiVersus—a crossover fighting game developed by Warner Bros.
MultiVersus is a crossover fighting game featuring a similar combat formula to that of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game features various characters from Warner Bros's different universes it owns. For example, the game features Adventure Time's Finn and Jake, Shaggy and Velma from Scooby Doo, and even Arya Stark from Game of Thrones. Alongside that, various game modes, cosmetics, and events will keep you playing for hours.

The game's free-to-play and currently in beta testing, so you can practically download it on Steam, Epic Games, PlayStation, or Xbox and kickstart your journey. There are pretty much only three main mechanics you'll need to know about MultiVersus to start playing. That is, combat, character selection, and perks. Besides, of course, cosmetics and profile banners, these aforementioned aspects comprise most of MultiVersus.
One of the more standout features of MultiVersus that I fell in love with at first glance was its featured characters. I love Adventure Time and Game of Thrones. so, so much. As soon as I knew Finn was a playable character, I bolted to my computer and downloaded MultiVersus.
Another aspect that sweetened the entire process of playing MultiVersus for someone who's never had his fair share of fighting games is the characters weren't added to merely serve as just attractions. They all contained easter eggs and features that felt fulfilling to discover when playing. For example, if you've also watched Adventure Time, you'd know Finn's ability in MultiVersus allows him to purchase items seen originally in Choose Goose's shop. These little hints of lore within MultiVersus made the game feel even more immersive.

There are three main modes, excluding the testing mode, where you can practice combos. Those modes are casual one-versus-one combat, team play, and free-for-all. There's a ranked mode coming soon too. The strategies, gameplay flow, and general motive for players in each mode change drastically depending on your choice. Team play heavily focuses on teamwork, a free-for-all is more about setting up opportune moments where you can knock out enemies, and the latter is relatively straightforward; be the better fighter.
Now, obviously, I can't praise the entire combat system in terms of it being balanced, mainly because I suck at fighting games. It wouldn't be much of a rundown coming from someone that can barely combo, let alone win more than two games in a row. Yes, I'm that bad. But I can tell you that MultiVersus felt terrific to play. There were a handful of combat combos, abilities, strategies, and just so many things you could pull off in a match.

I can't stress how great of a fighting game MultiVersus is for newcomers having never played fighting games. The game felt smooth and easy to grasp. Gameplay was thrilling, although mildly infuriating because I genuinely suck, it's still extremely enjoyable. MultiVersus's sound and visual design felt well-polished, especially for a game in beta testing.
It's genuinely such a fun fighting game. At the end of all of this, I still can't answer why I've never played fighting games, nor do I know why I haven't stumbled across any in the past. What I do know is that I'm interested in them now, thanks to MultiVersus.
