Play this game for simplicity’s sake – Tiny Football Quick Review

Translate
It’s football/soccer...but it’s tiny...and pixelated. That should make it fun, right? Right??
Micropose’s Tiny Football is a throwback to the old, top-down retro soccer games of the ’80s and ’90s such as Sensible Soccer and Microprose’s own Soccer from 1989. It sports simple, one button gameplay that controls every action: passing, shooting, tackles, crosses, throw-ins,  overhead kicks, free kicks, and more. There are also sixty-four national and club teams (with the “approximated” names of real players) with home and away kits, full squads, and a variety of different tournament options offered here.
THE STORY
Since there is absolutely no story in Tiny Football, I'll tell you a bit about the developer behind it. This game was developed by one person, Martyn Bissett, who had a sincere passion for the classic style of football/soccer games I mentioned above and wanted to create his own version of that for today’s sports gamers…so he did.
PLATFORMS
At the moment, Tiny Football is available on PC and iOS devices. I played the PC version via Steam and encountered no technical issues at all.
TIME PLAYED
I played Tiny Football for a little over three hours, and that was more than enough time to know what it’s all about (i.e., simplicity).
WHAT’S AWESOME
It’s fast, fun, and (yes, I’m using that word again) simple. If you’re sick of sports titles that make you memorize as many button presses as a tank commander just to perform a simple maneuver, then Tiny Football is the game for you. It’s a game designed for people who just want to hop right in and keep furiously pressing “A” until they score.
Goal celebrations. I must admit that I got a kick (pun intended) out of watching these little dudes rip off their jerseys and slide along the grass after bulging the ol’ onion bag. That never got old...and personality goes a long way in sports titles.
WHAT SUCKS
Lack of depth. I’ve stepped in puddles deeper than Tiny Football. So yes, its overall simplicity does come at a price—mostly when it comes to its context-sensitive, one-button controls. When you have one button that does everything in your game, things are going to go awry at times. For example, when you want to slide tackle an opposing player but you are so close to him you just steal the ball then kick it, willy-nilly, down the field. That happened way too many times for my liking. Football/soccer requires precision passes as you make your way down the pitch.
Player switching. Since there is only one button that controls everything, player switching is done automatically ,and it truly sucks. I almost always found myself in control of the wrong player at the wrong time. A second button should be added to the control scheme so you can manually switch to the proper player at the proper time.
SHOULD YOU PLAY IT?
If you just want a quick game of football/soccer that you can be in and out of in twenty minutes time then, yes, Tiny Football is for you. But if you are used to (and enjoy) the plethora of options and tweaks that the majority of today’s sports titles offer then, no, Tiny Football will not do anything for you as you will find it unsophisticated and get bored with it almost immediately.
I didn’t play the mobile version, but this is an experience that will most certainly go over better on mobile devices due to its quick hitting, get-in-and-get out gameplay.
