The creepier the better! - Games with disgusting monsters
Written by @Kef
Nothing makes a great horror game better than a terrifying monster. And when it comes to monsters in games, I prefer mine to be as gross as possible!
For this week’s collection, I’m running down a list of five games that feature some of the most memorably grotesque monster design ever.
The Callisto Protocol (PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X)
I haven’t actually played The Callisto Protocol yet—that’s my plan for tonight, as soon as the game unlocks!—but as a new game from some of the original developers behind the great Dead Space series, I’m confident this will have plenty of disgusting monsters. Just look at the weird enemy in this screenshot! I can’t wait to jump in.
245264Hell O City (Android)
I reviewed Hell O City earlier this year and discovered a fantastically twisted post-apocalyptic deckbuilder. What really sets this game apart, though, is its gross-out monster designs, with creatures that look straight out of a Silent Hill game. These creeps still pop up in my nightmares months later!
236507Identity V (Android, iOS, PC)
At its heart, Identity V is just a cutesier take on the asymmetrical multiplayer of Dead by Daylight. Don’t let “cutesier” fool you into thinking that it has no edge to its design, though. Some of Identity V’s hunters are profoundly unsettling, to the point that they’re really what makes the game worth playing at all!
128253Bloodborne (PlayStation 4)
Sure, Bloodborne has developer FromSoftware’s notorious level of difficulty to make players anxious. But it also raises the blood pressure with a horror aesthetic and the most disturbing monster designs of any of From’s games. Given the amount of nightmare fuel coursing through the world of Yharnam, it’s a wonder that people like me are dying for a sequel.
Antarctica 88 (Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series S and X)
Antarctica 88 is basically a video game version of John Carpenter’s The Thing, but, well, it turns out The Thing is one of the best horror movies of all time, and that lends itself pretty damn well to a game! The monsters that have invaded this lonely arctic research base had me jumping out of my seat and carefully peaking around every corner.
