Dancing Duelist is a startling and brief Deck-Building and Strategy game released recently by the Slay The Spire developers. It caught me off guard because it's not something you generally expect to see coming out of the blue all of a sudden.
Slay the spire is one of the games that helped popularize deck builders, thus many people appear to be quite excited for whatever they have planned for their future games, assuming there are any further games that are currently being worked on.
This isn't a game, but rather a proof of concept for the game engine GODOT, which appears to be gaining popularity due to being open source and free. I would assume that with the recent Unity issues and their CEO stepping down following the massive backlash, that more developers would transfer over to something that is very easy to comprehend and understand when transitioning over to it.
Presentation
The game is fun This game is receiving a lot of support because it was built by the same people that created Slay the Spire. Yes, the game is free but, has little depth other than choosing two cards, clicking auto play, and waiting to win or lose randomly. The strategy in this game is to select a character who specializes in one of the game's key rules above.
Gameplay
Characters Let's use Jazzy Jasper as an example. Jazzy starts off with a deck of cards that can be used to heal and deal damage, which correlates with the gain 50 HP rule to win and the survive for 20 turns rule. Meaning with each lose or win, you would want to add health cards and dodges to your deck and hope that they line up correctly.
Adding to the fact that there isn't much going on here other than picking one of the 11 characters and developing around their passives makes it an alright game to play for about and hour. There is nothing more here than to try the concept and move on.
Choose (2) cards! Here you could choose Slow Down and Visor to heal yourself while also preventing more damage from being delivered to you on your opponent's next turn. The actual deck building part is a really simple and that is essentially all there is to interact with.
Different passives Every character has a distinct style. Jazzy is a burst sustain character, whereas Weaver is duration & apply garbage to the enemy deck, exhausting or waiting them out with the amount of sustainability he can truly achieve if played effectively.
Trinkets Play enough times and win and you will be able take certain trinkets. Which can be beneficial or detrimental. It's fully random, much like the battles and card order. Some of these can be extremely strong, especially if you collect enough of them to stack, such as Dramamine, which can stack to use 4+ cards per turn instead of 3.
No complexity and fully automatic Yes, I get that the game is a demonstration of their ability to use a completely new engine and that it is free. But there's no complexity to it because all you do is push auto-play and watch in disbelief as you lose or win.
Manual mode is slower and only allows you to understand how you missed three turns in a row and perished so rapidly, or vice versa. All I mean is that instead of being random, allowing players to choose their cards to play, as in Slay The Spire, would have made this far more engaging and less boring as a speed auto-battler.
Conclusion
I would have liked to see a bit more I'm not implying that this is a game I would not suggest. It features some good concepts for a game that was created in three weeks. It demonstrates the developers' expertise and experience, as well as what they can accomplish in such a short amount of time, especially with a new completely new game engine.
It begs the question of what they could accomplish in a month or two with adequate funds and time to fully devote themselves to a quick project with more depth.
This concludes my views of this game; while my opinions may be met with criticism, that is what distinguishes gamers; you don't have to like the same things as others, nor do you have to agree with them. If you want to catch me on one of my streams or locate me on social media, you may do so at the following locations, I'm always playing something new.
