“Superliminal” is an intellectual and visually interesting puzzle game that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy outstanding a player a simple task to think outside the box, of course, literally. First-person puzzle game by Pillow Castle Games, where the player finds himself in a dreamlike world, where the physics and everything else Is different making for quite an unforgettable experience.
That is why the game’s main mechanism can be considered forced perspective. Thus, perceiving objects in the world can be altered with regard to how you can use them or not. For instance,if you lift an object and hold it closer to the lens and then release it, be sure it will become bigger as observed on the screen and if the reverse is the truth, move it to the background. It is smart and fun at the same time as it transfers the player from level to level and expects them to always think in a different way, not forgetting that it can get annoying at some point.
Altogether, the narration in “Superliminal” fits better than in any other game and excels in particular on the aspect of the atmosphere. The plot of the game is established by messages and a mysterious voice which contributes to the atmosphere of the game in which players advance step by step into the abyss.
There are many puzzles involved which are well constructed and steadily get more challenging, but not to the point where it gets irritating. However, some players might have a complain on the fact that the game is relatively short and with the estimated gameplay of about 2-3 hours. However, “Superliminal” creates an amazing impression because of the interesting gameplay and its ideas of perception.
The only potential drawback that can be discussed is that due to abstract nature the game can hardly compete for the attention of everyone. There might be cases where gamers who have a preference to linear puzzles and gameplay concepts may consider “Superliminal” rather out there.
