Fight of Animals: Solo Edition Review—This Ain’t a Wildlife Refuge

When the majority of your friends are pretty much fighting game enthusiasts, you’ll likely be bombarded with anything they can get their hands on in that very aspect. 

Well, that was especially so for me over the weekends. 

The entire group chat had been teeming with video clips of one scene that is arguably one of the competitive fighting game history’s most gobsmacking. Although the cancellation may have occurred a couple of months back, they said, and I quote, “in commemoration of the cancelled Evo tournament.” 

Being blown away by the incredible display of skills, I became so pumped up that I wanted to have a go and strive to replicate something as brilliant. Knowing how atrocious I am at fighting games, my friends recommended a more uncomplicated yet relatable game — Fight of Animals (FoA).

It is definitely something that you’d least expect: a myriad of chimerical pets bashing each other up with their bare knuckles (or wings) in a bizarre beat ’em up.

Based on animal memes like Eggdog and Muscle Fox, FoA is definitely something new (Well, the characters, at least). Nevertheless, the fighters may be designed in a cel-shaded style, but they still appear similar to their meme counterpart.

What’s more, the simplicity in its controls acts as an excellent introduction to the fighting game genre for newcomers (or even players like moi?), giving them their first taste of that delightfully sweet pleasure.

How the game starts is by having you face off all opponents in various modes—Arcade, Challenge, and Training Mode—with your trusty fighter, Power Hook Dog. 

Opting for Arcade mode, I’ve clocked in a couple of hours battling through a great many fighters (or rather, ahem, button-mashing...). In the end, all my efforts amounted to was just a word of thanks, a roll of credits, and a new fighter. Thanks for nothing, Digital Crafter.

As funky as it may appear in the beginning, FoA does come with a stable netcode. So, if you’re in search of something to play with your friends, this is the perfect time to check out the game here and perfect your fighting skills against the most formidable animals.
