Typoman Mobile (TM) casts you as a hero (built literally from the letters H, E, R, and O) who travels the dark, creepy lands and solves puzzles to save the world.
✔️ Stunning typographic dystopian art style
✔️ Close resemblance to Limbo and The Nightmare Before Christmas
✔️ Environmental storytelling
❌ Not much of a narrative in the game
✔️ A mashup of game elements (Side-scrolling platformer, wordplay and puzzle game mechanics)
✔️ Clever word puzzles
✔️ Trial and error is KEY
✔️ Hidden quotation marks to search for (and you’ll be shown quotes)
❌ No clear instructions
❌ No direct combat
❌ Solving the increasingly onerous and punishing puzzles is anything but straightforward
❌ Numerous frustrating deaths
❌ Controls are wonky at times
❌ Hints don’t work for me
✔️ Mournful soundscape
❌ Nothing spectacular
TM stands out from the crowd thanks to its originality and unique gimmicks the developer has incorporated into the game. I may have enjoyed the concept of TM, frustrating and unclear at times but, it didn’t spoil my game play in the slightest.
As much as I appreciate games that are not afraid to dabble in new things, the game is not without its flaws. If you’re after clever word puzzle games, you may find an unexpected gem here. Just be prepared to have your platforming patience tested far more than it ought to be.
