King of Crabs Review—A Joyously Anomalous Battle Royale That Takes You Under the Sea

Lately, I've worn myself out with innumerable long games, ranging from massive open-world explorations to surviving the odds in horror titles.

Since I am in need of a well-deserved break, I find myself in search of a much-needed fix. 

You know, something that'll offer me moments when my ever-growing self has no other choice but to go on a bloodthirsty rampage to survive after getting thrown into a surreal world teeming with crustaceans? That, mates, is King of Crabs (KoC), summed up.

It is definitely something that you'd least expect: a myriad of crustaceans fighting to the last claw for the domain of the seas.

How the game starts is by having you face off all the colourful lobsters and other deep-sea marine life around you while you are merely a tiny, drab little crab. Wouldn't you agree that it paints a pretty depressing picture?

Before long, you'll find yourself facing off all opponents in various modes—Friendly, King and Team Mode—with your trusty crustacean. 

Opting for Friendly mode, I've clocked in a couple of hours battling through what I'd call a chaotic seafood buffet (or rather, ahem, button-mashing...), eating enough to outlive everyone. After all, every crab is out there for themselves without a care for anyone's survival.

No time is wasted in unleashing my crustacean-filled madness, obliterating yet another baby shark that scuttles by me. A turtle takes notice and decides to make a move. Panicked, I begin tapping on my screen, grabbing a nearby weapon—a katana—before slapping my newfound nemesis across the face with it.

The more deaths you rack up under your belt, the larger your crab grows.

 

Being a crab of such tremendous size is something one would deem as a precarious position, especially when your appetite grows alongside your size. On the one hand, your HP bar eventually begins to deplete at an alarming rate, but on the other hand, it may pose a risk as the chances of me dying is much higher since I will be encountering other players and enormous crustaceans more frequently. Exciting, init?

Yet, I think what contributes to the downside of KoC is the game's dependence on ads. What this means is that you will have to sit through an ad before getting your hands on extra lives and other in-game currencies. Thankfully, I found the durations to be pretty short, so it offers me a sort of break time to do something else. It's an excellent option for anyone who loves to chill and mess around with your phone while half-watching something on the telly, IMO.
