Indies’ Lies is what you might call a Spire-like. It takes the shape of Slay the Spire, then adds a few new twists to the formula. Some of these work, some of them don’t, but the end result is an engaging card-based dungeon crawler that’s easy to get addicted to. The game sees you traversing a dungeon, picking your route along a path littered with fights, events, shops, shrines and bosses. When you get in a scrap you use your deck of cards to attack and defend. Take down the enemies and you can move onto the next room.
Gameplay
I actually like interesting innovations this game brought. Additional characters with their own decks add another tactical layer, where we decide to care for companions or use them as expendable material (there are even cards encouraging this type of play). Rune cards that can be attached to other cards for additional effect (hello, Monster Train) seem cool, but do not add anything significantly game-changing. The best gameplay decision is that when acquiring new cards you can choose to replace existing cards: never daw this in any other game, and I think it is great how we can finally get rid of initial weak cards without too much effort.
The Talent system is an interesting way to replace relics. They are still random, but provide some freedom of choice, which is always a nice thing to have. The random encounters are kinda ok (what would you expect of random encounters?), but I would personally like a bit more variety. Oh, and dungeon map, though innovative, looks a bit confusing, not allowing to adequately plan the road ahead of time.
Now, two biggest flaws of the game is the lack of variety and lack of synergy. Since all characters share the same card pool, it does not matter which one we pick. I played three first characters and got exactly the same gameplay. In fact, choosing different companions randomizes the game much more than choosing different heroes.
While the game introduces a lot of cards with various effects, most of them poorly work with each other. Instead of relying on specific conditions which may never occur, I'd rather pick the card that does most damage. And if players start thinking this way, it means the developers made something fundamentally wrong.
You guys now can play the Knight DLC on cellphones, hope you enjoying it!(p≧w≦q)
