High on Life (Reviewed)
Released: Dec 13th, 2022
Price: $59.99 USD
High on Life is a game made from the mind of Justin Roiland. Humanity is being threatened by an alien cartel who wants to use them as drugs. Your job is to rescue and partner with charismatic guns to take down Garmantuous and his evil gang and save the world. Do try not to get side tracked by the comedy!
Things surrounding this "game"
It may go over your head if you don't understand what it is
This is a satirical experience than it is a game. It's more or less about Justin. If you're like me, you'll spend an awful lot of time standing around listening and taking in the scenery when characters are talking for 3 to 10 minutes.
The dialog is funny, and what you would expect from him, but sometimes poor and excessive. The type of humor he and many others are displaying is, sitting down in a room, oftentimes drunk and just going on a tangent. Record it, play it back with some weird or funny characters. That's pretty much it.
If you have never seen Rick and Morty then you just won't get it and that's fine, but be sure you understand this before taking a look at it. People pay good money to get yelled at by Rick / Morty's voice actor.
It's voiced by many talented voice actors
Normally for me, I don't often care about voice actors because quite frankly I know so little outside of a few like Tara Strong and Justin, but when you do notice them, you really get excited to hear them in a video game. It's great!
Outside of the major voice actors, mostly everyone has heard about there are some not so likely voice actors you wouldn't think to expect.
A few like Joel Haver & Zach Hadel known for comedic content on Youtube. Honestly if it was just Roiland trying to carry the game with his humor it would be too similar to Trover Saves the Universe, but it's genuinely really exciting!
It's definitely not worth $59.99 unless you want to support him
I don't say this in a bad way or anything like that. It's a decent and good game with many funny and wonderful characters, voiced by many talented people.
But it feels like a $39.99 game, which can be acquired whenever it's on sale.
One minor/big problem
The game is more or less like watching a TV show
Yes, there is combat, exploration and boss fights all of which are generally fun and interesting, but when you're not doing that, you're basically watching and listening to the things around you, for $59.99 if that makes sense.
One upside to this is that you can disable the frequency of gun and world dialog so you can focus more on the game, but I think this should have been asked of the player at the beginning of the game. Some people find it annoying.
Extras
There are actual movies on TV
I was surprised, but there are full length movies in this game, mixed in with the general silly things, one of them is Tammy and the T-Rex, a movie from 1994.
I do believe there are also achievements for watching them all or sitting through the silly things you see on a lot of the terminals around the city before heading out for your bounties. This is obviously optional of course, you don't have to.
The opening of the game could be it's own thing
If you've ever played games like Doom or Quake back in the day, you'd be surprised to know the very opening scene you start in, is inside of another game Buck Thunder II. While it isn't an actual game I think it would be pretty damn great, with or without the Roiland voices constantly yelling at you.
Would you recommend this game?
Yes when it's on sale.
Yes if you want to support Roiland.
I like Justin Roiland, and I like Rick & Morty and his humor but I can honestly say that the experience in this game is genuinely funny. The sassy snaps at your choices, the interaction with the world and characters even your guns is great.
Now getting to the main thing. The actual gameplay itself is lacking in some regards. Since the game relies so heavily on being more like a TV show, it feels like you're just sitting back on a couch watching, not playing the actual game.
The missions are long, funny, difficult if you change the difficulty up, but it can get rather exhausting. Thankfully there is an option to lower the frequency in the options menu for the amount of chatter that goes on, if it becomes an issue.
This concludes my review of this game, while my opinions may be met with criticism, that's what makes gamers unique, you don't have to like the same things that others do, nor do you have to agree with them.
