Out of all the base-building strategy games I’ve played, Frontier Chronicles has to be one of the least interesting ones. After spending nearly a decade grinding games like Clash of Clans, Boom Beach, and Castle Clash, Frontier Chronicles might look appealing but it leaves so much to be desired. Is it terrible? Not at all. It’s just not great or worth the time when there are so many better options out there.
Of course, it’s not entirely fair to pass judgment on a base-building strategy game when I’ve only literally played an hour and a half. However, from what I’ve experienced over the years and my time playing Frontier Chronicles, I can say the game’s initial gameplay is alright.
Gameplay’s pretty textbook and there’s really nothing intriguing right off the bat that makes Frontier Chronicles massively different from most games. The game’s turn-based battles are the only minute detail about Frontier Chronicles that distinguishes itself from the many average titles out there. Beyond this, it plays out as another base-building, resource-farming, strategy game.
Frontier Chronicles has a deep tutorial system to hold my hand along the way, which might be great for beginners. However, for base-building veterans like myself, it was pesky and frustrating to have my freedom bounded by seemingly infinite missions. It took me twenty minutes to reach my first progression wall, which lasted half an hour, and then gameplay started slowing down even more. Eventually, I reached a point where I had to wait an hour, which forced me to give up and stop playing. It's worth mentioning that progression in Frontier Chronicles seems much, much slower than in most base-building titles.
Frontier Chronicles has the potential to go far, but its gameplay lacks the excitement to keep me continuously entertained. Now, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a terrible, horrendous game that everyone should stay away from. It’s still decent, but it wouldn’t be a recommendation that I'd give someone.
