This racing game rivals Mario Kart - KartRider: Drift Quick Review

PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?

Play KartRider: Drift! I’m far from a racing expert, but KartRider: Drift is one of the best racing games I’ve played.

TIME PLAYED

I played KartRider: Drift for three and a half hours between the PC and mobile versions. On mobile, I played for around an hour, with the rest of my time spent drifting and driving on PC. In KartRider: Drift, each match takes roughly a minute or two to complete—sometimes even less depending on the game mode.

WHAT’S AWESOME

• Gameplay. In KartRider: Drift, what you see is what you get—and what you get is a simple, polished, and fantastic racing game. The game features various modes where I could choose to race against others or try to beat my best time. The interface and controls feel great, and the mechanics are easy to learn.

• Tutorial. Hardcore racing fans may not get as much out of it, but for a less seasoned racer like myself, going through KartRider: Drift’s comprehensive tutorial helped me tremendously. The tutorial takes around three to four minutes to complete, but it taught me everything I needed to know, and at a decent pace too.

• PC performance. It shouldn't be a surprise, but there's a significant difference between playing KartRider: Drift on PC and mobile. The game looks and feels much better on PC, and there are no performance issues either. It’s worth noting that compared to mobile, I had a much easier time winning on PC too.

• Map design. The maps in KartRider: Drift mesmerized me. They’re really polished and pretty, to the point that I went out of my way to test every single map before I settled down and focused on improving my racing abilities.

• Music. I always love when games have great music, and KartRider: Drift doesn’t disappoint at all. The game’s upbeat, techno music really helped me get into the groove and feel the competitive spirit I needed to win—and even when I lost, I still gladly listened to the catchy tunes.

WHAT SUCKS

• Mobile performance. KartRider: Drift functions smoothly and flawlessly on PC, but when it comes to its mobile counterpart, the game’s pretty unstable, laggy, and ugly to look at. Even at max settings on a strong Samsung Ultra S22, the game looked blurry and dull. Since it’s also cross-platform, I found myself at a disadvantage facing PC players.
