Quests? I don’t think so, I’m going to explore some caves - Kandria Quick Review
PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?
Definitely play it! I had no clue what I was getting into when I started playing Kandria. Don’t let its generic looks fool you. This narrative-driven game captivated me with its deep rewarding quests and strange, vast open world.
TIME PLAYED
I played Kandria for four hours but spent half of that exploring caves and secluded areas rather than taking on the main story. The other half had me completing quests and talking to interactable characters. Individual quests took me anywhere from fifteen to forty minutes to complete each.
WHAT’S AWESOME
• Exploration. I’m guilty of wandering off and spending most of my time exploring areas in games. It’s a bad habit that usually lands me in many unlucky predicaments, but Kandria didn’t punish me for being adventurous. The game welcomed it. I regularly ignored new quests for an hour or more, mainly because I was too busy discovering things I’d never seen before. Although I might’ve gotten trapped in caves a few times, discovering Kandria’s every nook and cranny was the most fulfilling part of this enjoyable experience by far.
• Narrative. Kandria’s narrative is just as deep and well-designed as the many caves I journey into in the game. Each quest and bit of dialogue taught me interesting tidbits that helped me to piece together the story of this world. The game begins as a simple narrative about a dystopian future, but I felt tremendously rewarded as I unraveled the greater depth to this story.
• Aesthetic. Kandria’s music absolutely slaps. It really sets the creepy mood for the game. The visuals complement the music and narrative with an eerie, run-down vibe.
WHAT SUCKS
• Slightly difficult. I might be complaining because I have the reflexes of an old person, but Kandria felt a little difficult to progress through. The game’s mechanics involve jumping around, moving, and dashing, but some areas required me to somersault perfectly through a small hole surrounded by spikes. These difficult sections got in the way of my exploration, even if they were worth overcoming.
