If you have the time to spare, Dark Mine provides a great opportunity to enjoy a decent casual, retro-style game about digging tunnels and killing monsters. The game’s straightforward and doesn’t really hide anything. What you see is what you get—and what you get is an easy-to-understand, pixel platformer with enough action to keep you busy for a short while.
In Dark Mine, I needed to learn only a few things: tunnel down into the earth to collect light and kill any monster in my way. The game revolves around collecting light as it’s the only thing that keeps all the spooky, scary monsters at bay. This light diminishes over time, and if I didn’t collect enough before that happened, the game ended.
However, collecting light doesn’t come easy. I had to dig tunnels and I needed to kill monsters that blocked my path. Sometimes I’d even have to find another route to go since certain areas were too dangerous to pass. I had three lives each run to keep me going, but if I ever touched or got hit by a monster, I’d lose them. If I lost all those lives, the game would restart from the beginning of that dungeon. Usually, it took me between fifteen to twenty minutes before I died in Dark Mine.
Dark Mine’s one of those games that gets much more challenging and fun as I’d progress. The first few steps feel easy to achieve, but it’s only after around ten minutes into the game does it start introducing different kinds of monsters, and a lot more of them too. I definitely had a blast trying to see how far I could make it in Dark Mine, but there is one problem that kept me from playing. Forced ads.
The game always forcefully played ads every time I died in Dark Mine. These ads are no longer than probably five to ten seconds, but since I played for an hour, it felt punishing and a little frustrating to encounter them. That said, if I were to play Dark Mine a little more casually, in between breaks, I probably wouldn’t care too much. Beyond this, the game feels great and plays even better. It’s straightforward, enjoyable, and worth a try.
