Endling: Extinction is Forever is one of those games that's a double-edged sword. On the one hand, the visuals are beautiful, the gameplay is easily mastered, and the narrative is impressively told. But on the other, being placed in the paws of a fox in an apocalyptic world where everything, including the environment, was out to kill me and my cubs was emotionally draining. But despite this sobering fact, Endling is worth checking out if you value quality over escapism.
For starters, the fox is one of my favorite animals. Small and clever, so I was more than happy to jump into Endling without knowing what to expect, and what I got was... well.. unexpected.
Endling: Extinction Forever tells the story of a mother fox that finds her home ravaged in a post-apocalyptic world. The goal is to keep your cubs from starving while helping them grow in a harsh world, and I do mean harsh. Everything wants to kill you, humans, the environment, and even other animals. There's also a narrative as your mission becomes finding a cub stolen by humans early in the game.
If this sounds too close to home, well, you're not wrong. There was a point in the game where my fox had a freaking bag stuck on her head that drained her health! This added a sense of realism to Endling that made me think... uh...maybe this future actually isn't too far off.
Despite this, the gameplay is incredible. I used my fox skills, like scent, to capture prey like mice and fish. The narrative also deserves a shout-out, as it's emotionally gripping and engaging without a word of dialogue, and of course, the beautiful visuals and 2.5D backdrops.
Endling asks a lot out of its audience emotionally, but if you can handle it, it's well worth your time.
