PLAY IT OR SKIP IT?
Play it if you like city-building sims or relaxing games. Settlement Survival is a city-building sim that’s less focused on surviving and more about building a town. The game’s relaxing and perfect to play on breaks but isn’t challenging at all. It has a few issues that might be dissuading, but considering it’s still a demo, Settlement Survival’s future looks promising and worth visiting.
TIME PLAYED
I played Settlement Survival for three hours. I managed to get through all the tasks available in the demo in an hour and twenty minutes. After this, the game slowed down and there were no more missions to complete. I ended up using this time to completely harvest all the resources on the map and decorate my town with buildings and statues.
WHAT’S AWESOME
• Building a beautiful city. There’s nothing I love more and that’s so relaxing in city-building sims than decorating my own town and getting it into shape. In Settlement Survival, there were a lot of buildings to place and many more decorations and ornaments to pick and drop all over my city.
• Researching. The game got a lot more interesting the longer I played because I could unlock research points. These points were needed to develop technology and acquire different structures to grow my town. Because of this, I needed to research specific things to acquire other advancements, which made the game a little complex, but more enjoyable.
• Art style. Settlement Survival’s low-poly art style looks great close-up and from afar. I love that each object, character, and structure is meticulously designed and unique.
WHAT SUCKS
• Not enough guidance. I’m fortunate that I’ve played multiple city-building sims before this, so grasping the fundamentals of Settlement Survival came easily. However, newer players might have a harder time. Even with my experience in the genre, I still struggled to figure out some elements, like the types of resources I needed and which research advancements were more important. Although a guidebook helped me, I wish there was a thorough tutorial at the start.
• No bigger objective at the moment. I had a pretty breezy time playing Settlement Survival because there was no challenge at all. I effortlessly completed each task within an hour, which left me feeling unfulfilled. There wasn’t any significant survival element besides the depletion of certain resources that made the game slightly harder.
• A few unpolished aspects. This isn’t a considerable issue since the game’s still a demo, but some of the visual designs are unpolished. A few of the icons in the research tab weren’t rendered and the character models glitched out of the screen.
