First off, I would like to apologize to the developers for not being the target audience. Second, I would like to thank you for taking the time to add enough English subtitles that I have little need to translate the game. Third, I would like to congratulate you on a great start.
I am sure most of your western feedback will be generic, since the western audience is known for either ranting about broken games, rambling about the series behind a game, or reciting one-line reviews from every other game. I will try to be as detailed as possible to compensate.
This game is both simple and complex in all the right ways. A lot of games try for impressive visuals, immersive environments, and immense control schemes to end up failing on at least one of them. KAI.REN appears to aim for the right purpose at the right time. The environments are detailed enough, but they do not steal the focus from the action. They could easily waste a lot of effort to make them more realistic, only to be passed by in mere seconds. The areas that do have focus have more than enough detail. This is a smart design.
The controls are extremely simple, but offer all of the main actions that would be required. They are spaced well and just large enough to be easily pressed without getting in the way of seeing everything happening. This is aided by a good choice for the camera angle, which is something not many games accomplish.
That said, there are some things that still need some work. There are quite a few spots where the resource names appear in place of the text. If this is not meant to use localized text before a final version, I would prefer to see the original text over a placeholder. It is usually better not to translate items at all than to let it look unfinished. I've also noticed that the goal boxes span beyond the panel when selecting a stage. It seems like the same boxes used in displaying completed goals at the end of the stage were used, but it doesn't really fit here. Perhaps stacking them or breaking them out of the panel would look cleaner. These boxes also appear to hang over the bottom of the bar at the end of a stage. If the boxes are meant to be larger than the bar, they should extend both above and below to look intentional.
I hope the game grows over time with things like costumes for your character. I like the ability to change swords, but did not see much for the appearance of my character. It may already be there and I simply haven't discovered it yet, but that can make the difference between a locked gender and appearance being criticized or being overlooked as necessary to the story.
I admit that this was not the game I expected from the preview images, but does exactly what it claims from the description. This is a tricky subject. So many games rope you in with previews and let you down when you realize it is not what you had hoped. In this case, it was only different. I usually wouldn't say this, but leaving out some of the more obvious gameplay images was a good choice. That is something I honestly don't feel most games should ever attempt.
