20 Pokémon characters inspired by real wild animals（2/4）

It is customary for Pokémon designs to draw inspiration from real-world animals. This approach not only enhances our connection with Pokémon but also allows for artistic modifications that make them even more extraordinary, distinct, and endearing

Now, let's take a look at the five Pokémon of the day.

1.Psyduck/platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus)

There's no denying the inspiration behind this Pokémon. I mean, seriously, where else can you find a creature sporting both luscious hair and a bill like a duck? Just like the platypus, this character is also at home in the water, inhabiting freshwater lakes, ponds, and rivers.

With its unique and peculiar combination of features, when scientists first laid eyes on a platypus specimen, they actually questioned its authenticity, suspecting it to be a whimsical amalgamation of different animals stitched together. And who can blame them? After all, an egg-laying mammal with a bill and toxic spurs is quite extraordinary. Perhaps this is why it served as inspiration for a zany psychic creature that bears a striking resemblance to a rubber duck!

2.Caterpie/Eastern tiger swallowtail caterpillar (Papilio glaucus)

The creature upon which this Pokémon is based is exceptionally intriguing. This is due to its remarkable mimicry abilities. It possesses two vibrant spots on its thorax that closely resemble eyes. These adaptations have evolved to discourage potential predators, who mistake them for a snake! Furthermore, it employs an organ called an osmeterium that unfurls when threatened, resembling a flickering serpentine tongue and further enhancing the illusion.

3.Poliwag/translucent tadpoles

This Pokémon closely resembles a translucent tadpole, both in appearance and habitat (pictured below are more common tadpoles). These transparent tadpoles are not a specific species of frog or toad, but rather albino or lacking certain skin pigments.

This characteristic gives them a somewhat eerie appearance, enabling us to observe their internal organs at work. Interestingly, the spiral on Poliwag's underside actually represents a neatly coiled intestine! Sadly, due to their visibility to predators, these tadpoles often have a short lifespan.

4.Wooper/axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)

Similarly, Wooper draws inspiration from axolotls, an aquatic creature with a larval appearance. Unlike tadpoles, axolotls never undergo metamorphosis, the transformative process into an adult form. These remarkable creatures, known for their uniqueness, retain their larval characteristics throughout their adult lives, remaining fully aquatic and retaining their gills.

In contrast, most other salamander species lose their gills upon reaching maturity. Regrettably, these extraordinary amphibians are increasingly scarce in their natural habitats due to factors such as fishing, pollution, and habitat destruction.

5.Shellos/Loch's chromodoris (Chromodoris lochi)

The inspiration for this incredibly eccentric-looking Pokémon comes from an equally peculiar creature - a vibrantly colored and patterned sea slug known as Loch's Chromodoris (Chromodoris lochi).

Sea slugs, also known as nudibranchs, form a captivating group of animals that display an astonishing array of colors and shapes. They range from being hot pink with a flurry of papillae (Okenia rosacea) to sporting bright orange hues with black spots (Thecacera pacifica). In an amusing twist, the latter species is sometimes referred to as the Pikachu sea slug, owing to its resemblance to the beloved Pokémon!
