Quasimorph (Demo Reviewed)
Developer: Magnum Scriptum
Release Date: Aug 16th, 2023
Price: TBD
Quasimorph is a top down action roguelike where you play as a hardened PMC warrior in a dark turn-based extraction RPG. Unravel the dark mystery behind the threat to all existence by engaging in harsh combat, managing your ship, hunger, health and gear condition all while trying to manage your inventory.
Presentation
Basic
The music is good, but many of the objects on the screen are initially unclear because there is no tutorial explaining what they do and why they are necessary.
Visually, it's like if you took Doom and converted the first person to a top down perspective. It's not bad, and it works, but the janky controls make it difficult to move around because of the real-time turn-base gameplay, meaning you move and then the enemies move, so it feels slow with the very tiny delay between your inputs.
This makes it very likely that you will overshoot your movement and run directly into the line of fire or into a massive melee strike ruining the run entirely.
Demo Gameplay
Brutal
Due to my lack of knowing what I need to do and how to successfully prepare for it. I have yet to progress past the first extraction zone since the cannibals are so difficult to avoid and knockback because they appear everywhere with guns.
Prior to extraction, you have access to explore in which you must complete tasks. These tasks are then linked to the ultimate assignment before you may extract the artifacts and grant yourself even better gear on your future journey.
The gameplay is adequate, despite the fact that it is quite challenging, and the backpack management, as well as the conditions, sicknesses, hunger, and health, make it even more difficult, since you only have so many healing choices.
You get used to it, but it doesn't make it any easier because you still have to cope with the last objective, which often results in your death.
Conclusion
Isn't going to be an easy game
While I didn't think I'd make it past the initial extraction. I could see myself attempting it in the future if the Devs adjusted the difficulty or, at the very least, provided a setting for players to make the game easier or more challenging to suit their skill level. It's not often that you come across a survival roguelike game that combines all of these states that you must control while simultaneously attempting to reach the final stage without dying to the swarms of enemies.
Because of the change in art style, the ship building and trip element of the game seems quite interesting, albeit it doesn't appear like I am capable of reaching such a destination at this time.
This concludes my views of this game; while my opinions may be met with criticism, that is what distinguishes gamers; you don't have to like the same things as others, nor do you have to agree with them.
