Cataclismo is a resource management tower defense game with story element that puts you in a dark fantasy world where you must build fortresses and defend against waves of Horrors, in this world you must lead an expedition beyond the last city's gates to recapture mist-shrouded remains and recreate humanity.
This type of game, as it currently stands, encompasses many parts of a strategy game and a tower defense resource management. I feel like this game shows a lot of games, such as Stronghold Crusaders and Age of Empires II, as it feels built around those foundations, with plenty of potential for tower defense.
Story
Intriguing
The plot appears to focus around a type of material that, when interacted with by humans or animals, turns them into horrors with the desire to make everything in their path into horrors. For a one-hour demo, the voice acting and story telling are excellent. I'm actually very curious to hear more about the story. Impressive!
Presentation
Great
This game's music and visuals complement each other nicely. I thought the avatars were a little weird in the initial tutorial, but it didn't bother me much after we arrived to town and started playing the game.
The noise of the day-night cycle, as well as the narration in between the dialogue and action, is amazing. I can hardly wait for the game to be published.
Gameplay
Engrossing
While the game is only 40-60 minutes long, the gameplay is quite nostalgic for someone like myself who grew up with classic castle and economy building games with the ability to control units and conquer the world in multiple ways.
The capacity to build and craft your own defenses, as well as manage resources and townspeople in the face of ever-increasing odds is a well done concept.
There are numerous things I would like to see in terms of game management in the future. Perhaps hunger and contentment, or other such traits. But what we have today isn't all that bad either; an Oxygen mechanic that drops in proportion to the quantity of corruption generated by the mist. There's a lot on the pipeline for future, so it's safe to assume that things can only get better from here.
Conclusion
A very interesting game
I didn't give much thought before playing this game, but the first thing that drew my attention was the fact that it was a visually stunning tower defense game. I had no prior awareness of it being a base manager or builder, which surprised me in a good way. The terrible problem is that there is currently no non-demo tutorial gameplay available. It's only the first two tasks that are quite a handhold.
This is a game that will definitely be on my radar for future releases because it piques my curiosity in what I like in a tower defense game with a bit more depth than others that are predominantly just one genre and not a mix of them.
This concludes my views of this game; while my opinions may be met with criticism, that is what distinguishes gamers; you don't have to like the same things as others, nor do you have to agree with them.
