Clash Royale starts off with fair matchmaking but then progressively gets more challenging. As a f2p player, I think the progression system is pretty balanced and it's mostly long term. At first, you get matched with bots / people that have around the same level cards as you, but once you get around the higher trophy range, you face less bots and go against people with higher levels and can sometimes be impossible to win. The game can be quite stressful at times but can also be very rewarding. Although I still play and enjoy clash royale, I've hated the past few updates as they make the game more p2w and unfair for people who don't spend money. Right now might be one of the worst times to play as a newcomer but it I would definitely recommend it.
