Fans angry as Apex Legends crossover event with Final Fantasy VII costs hundreds to get all rewards
Apex Legends is no stranger to crazy microtransactions, but the latest crossover event with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has outraged the community for its absolutely horrendous loot box prices. Reportedly, it will cost players up to $360 to collect every in-game item in the event.
Launched on January 9, the crossover event brought various cosmetics and items inspired by the upcoming hotly anticipated Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The unlocks include Cloud’s famous Buster Sword, making it particularly appealing to long-time Final Fantasy heads who are also Apex Legends players, although it’s not totally clear how much crossover there is between those two fan bases. Either way, this could have been a big event with broad appeal.
However, due to the pricing of the loot boxes and a confusing discount system, fans are fuming over how much they’ll actually need to spend to get some of the rarer cosmetics. The loot box system for this crossover event is designed in a way where the first few boxes are relatively cheap, but after acquiring two or more items, the prices get increasingly more expensive. After acquiring sixteen or more items, the event loot boxes revert to their regular price, which means at that point, players need to spend $10 to open a single pack. While players can acquire the Buster Sword by opening boxes, the chances are so low (less than one percent) that most players will only get it by acquiring all thirty-six other items, filling the promotion bar to immediately unlock the weapon. And doing that requires spending $360 on loot boxes—which understandably has many players disgusted.
There hasn’t been any word from the Apex Legends publisher Electronic Arts or developer Respawn Entertainment so far about any potential updates or price changes. Until then though, it seems like the community will probably sit this event out.
