GTA 3 finished in less than an hour, the impressive new record.
Recently, speedrunner "Guywithalightsaber," achieved an enviable accomplishment: finishing GTA 3 in 59 minutes and 43 seconds, wiping out the previous record seen in December 2021.
The secret behind this phenomenal exploit lies in the unique strategies adopted by Guywithalightsaber. One of the most interesting tactics is the clever use of in-game cameras. By constantly alternating between the third-person and "cinematic" views, the player was able to force the game to reload the roads, temporarily wiping out surrounding vehicles and allowing very high-speed driving without obstacles.
Another masterful move involves the ingenious way of exploiting GTA 3's replay function. By creating a replay when entering a mission marker and replaying it later, the player is able to convince the game that he or she has accepted two missions at once. This ruse allows the player to instantly complete more missions than would normally be required to progress through the game.
This new world record testifies however how much a title from 2001, still manages to be a true benchmark, not only for speedrunners, but for all gamers. The focus now shifts to the Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ), scheduled to start on Sunday, January 14, where GTA 3 speedrunners will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of an international audience.
In short, as the world eagerly awaits the arrival of Grand Theft Auto 6, the nostalgic lure of GTA 3 persists and we couldn't be happier about it.
