Overcooked....oh boy. A title I’ve been dreading to mention. I can barely utter the name of this title without having flashbacks of me frantically trying to extinguish a roaring kitchen fire, while simultaneously watching “someone“ put in a burger entree when the order clearly says salad, and then being asked if I’m....“LOOKING AT THE GOD*AMN RECIPE CARDS?!?“...
...(deep breathe).
Overcooked is a soul destroying, relationship testing, nightmare (**clears throat...), but fun. Overcooked is a couch co-op multiplayer cooking simulation game, developed by Ghost Town Games and published by Team17 in the summer of 2016. Met with massive amounts of positive reviews and being nominated for four and winning two (Best British and Best Family Game) awards. Overcooked has been release on a decent amount of consoles (PS4/5, PC, Switch, Xbox 1/X/S). With any success in gaming, comes sequels. Overcooked has gone on to have a sequel created (Overcooked 2) and numerous DLC’s. I have had the pleasure(...and misfortune) of experiencing them all in ridiculous detail.
ᴛʜᴇ ᴏᴠᴇʀᴀʀᴄʜɪɴɢ ɴᴀʀʀᴀᴛɪᴠᴇ:
You are a cute, bubbly, sous chef, that has been tasked with feeding the patrons that visit your dining establishment. You are in charge of prepping, cooking, plating, serving, and clean up as numerous tickets stack up in your serving window. Orders must be completed in sequence and in the allotted time, to get the maximum amount of points per order...sounds easy in theory, right? In execution, it's a completely different ball game..
ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴜɴɪᴄᴀᴛɪᴏɴ ɪs ʏᴏᴜʀ ᴋᴇʏ ɪɴɢʀᴇᴅɪᴇɴᴛ...ɴᴏ,sᴇʀɪᴏᴜsʟʏ.
This game will test your communicative, observational, and multitasking skills. If your spouse didn’t think you paid attention to them before, this game will multiply that feeling by a thousand. The game will rearrange the layout of your kitchen every round, and the dishes that you prepare will go up in complexity. It’s highly recommended that you work on your “synergy“ with your (self-appointed) “head chef“ in the beginning levels, and this might be a good time to assign roles (e.g. “you take rice, I’ll take tortillas“). It’s better for you to rip that band-aid off now, before the game inevitably does it for you (trust me).
ᴛʜᴇ ᴅʟᴄ’s ᴀʀᴇ sᴏᴍᴇ ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ ʙᴇsᴛ ᴇxᴛᴇɴsɪᴏɴs ᴏꜰ ᴀ ᴄᴏᴜᴄʜ ᴄᴏ-ᴏᴘ ɪᴠᴇ sᴇᴇɴ.
From zombie hordes to a clear nod at "Alice and Wonderland", Overcooked has outdone itself with numerous and creative DLC’s to play and enjoy. You can seriously get your money’s worth out of this game. With the amount of times you’ll rage quit, you have about 2 months of content on your hands (not even going to mention “competitive mode”…you don’t need that type of trauma). With the purchase of the remastered edition titled “All You Can Eat”, players will be able to enjoy maps from both games and have access to all of the DLC’s.
ᴅᴀʀᴇ ɪ sᴀʏ, ɪᴍ ɪɴ sᴜᴘᴘᴏʀᴛ ᴏꜰ ᴀ ᴍᴏʙɪʟᴇ ᴠᴇʀsɪᴏɴ?..
This title would be awesome as a mobile game! I’ve thought about this concept the moment I played overcooked for the first time. It would be a massive ice breaker in non - entertainment centric spaces for parties or events. To have the ability to sit in a little circle with friends or loved ones, to crack out some dishes would be its own new level of enjoyment (and to not have to lug around a Nintendo switch would be an added bonus). Additional idea, If Ghost Town Games came up with a way to broadcast the game from an app, and gave us the ability to use our phones as controllers....that would be too perfect!!
Even with all of the stress that this game has caused me, it is still a must play, and a need to have for any family or friend group. You will seriously have some fun (...and not so much fun, at the same time).
