An idle RPG that’s pretty but shallow - Eternal Evolution Quick Review
Whether you love idle games or not, there’s nothing like a title that demonstrates just how far we’ve come on mobile devices. With its impressive graphics, diverse backgrounds, colorful cast of characters (they even have freaking Guan Yu in this game), summons, and multiple game modes, Eternal Evolution certainly checks all the boxes the genre offers. But is checking boxes enough?
THE STORY
The opening moments of Eternal Evolution introduce a story that’s as convoluted as it is nonsensical. A group of heroes face down a giant monster named Torques in an attempt to recapture a device known as a “drive key” from some opposing group called the “Evo League.” The game throws a ton of other fantasy terms at the player, including “Candalon squad,” “Giant Tower,” and a robot named “Woodpecker I.” It’s all a confusing mishmash, but the good news (?) is that narrative is not much of a focus in the game at all beyond the first hour or so.

Eternal Evolution is available for iOS and Android devices. I played on iOS and didn’t run into any technical issues.
TIME PLAYED
I spent around five hours playing Eternal Evolution, one of them completely idle, watching my loot build up. The game has an auto-battle feature that allowed my characters to fight the enemies by themselves and even use special abilities without my input when their rage meters were filled. Most of my interaction in combat came from positioning my five-character team to allow them to do the most damage or tank properly.
WHAT’S AWESOME
• The characters. The heroes look great in Eternal Evolution and are quite unique. There are over two hundred heroes to collect, including cyborgs, dragons, robots, humanoids, and even a dude who rides a motorcycle and wields a gunblade! Every character has a unique special ability makes the collection aspect of Eternal Evolution even more enticing.
• Quick gameplay progression. Battles are pretty fast, and I managed to get through chapters relatively quickly. This meant accumulating new gear, loot, and experience. I had a good time collecting goodies and equipping my characters with upgraded swag.
• Game mechanics. Despite how cool the visuals are, the main problem I have with games like these is that the gameplay itself comes up short. You can only spend so many hours on a fully automated game like this before combat becomes repetitive. I wish I could have done more than move the characters around before battles.
SHOULD YOU PLAY IT?
Eternal Evolution is ultimately another gacha idle RPG in an already oversaturated genre. It’s by no means the worst of the bunch, and it looks very pretty. Still, the lackluster narrative, repetitive combat features, and even the lack of character voice-overs make this title easily forgettable compared to some other entries in the genre. By no means is it a waste of time, but ultimately Eternal Evolution hasn’t managed to hold my attention long-term.
