I don't think I've ever played a mobile game quite like Margonem Adventures. This fascinating title mixes first-person shooter, fantasy dungeon crawler, card game, and traditional mobile live service/gacha stuff, all brewed together into one bewildering but compelling concoction.
Most of the actual gameplay takes place in short dungeon levels with simple, Minecraft-esque visuals. When enemies spawn in—mostly skeletons, orcs, and such, at least in the early game—you can lock on to them to shoot spells from your staff. You also have access to two special spells at any one time that are drawn randomly from a deck of cards you equip before entering each dungeon.
These spells help mix up the combat and inform strategy. When fighting a boss, I needed to rely on heals and shield spells to keep my health up. When taking on a room full of smaller enemies, fire and lightning spells could clear things out quickly.
There's just enough randomness to this formula that it kept me on my toes, but not so much that I ever got frustrated at not having access to the perfect spell. And on top of that, there's an absurdly deep system of finding new gear and spells, upgrading both, making your way through an endless dungeon, and so much more. If a game is going to have all the normal mobile game stuff that gets so overwhelming sometimes, it should at least be unique as a game; Margonem Adventures definitely delivers on that front. Check it out!
