Hades plus gacha is a surprisingly solid combination

Both the art style and moment-to-moment combat of Myth: Gods of Asgard are very clearly inspired by one obvious source: Hades, the beloved roguelite action-RPG from Supergiant Games. That comparison may set Myth up for some unfortunate disappointment, however. It's not that Myth is bad; it's just not easy to live up to one of the best games of the last decade!
Once I got past that initial stumbling block, though, I was pretty quickly won over by what Myth: Gods of Asgard offers. I played through stories plucked from Norse mythology and unlocked four playable characters—Brynhild, Siegfrid, Thor, and Ullr. Each of these heroes has a unique main weapon along with their own special abilities and general feel to combat. But they all feel really great, and in general the game does a solid job of emulating the fast-paced, responsive battles of Hades.
Of course the biggest differences between Myth and Hades are in their structures. Myth is not a roguelite, and instead embraces free-to-play and gacha systems. The gacha is used to roll for "Divine Powers," special abilities and buffs offered by different members of the Norse pantheon of gods. Any gacha system is enough to put off some players, understandably, but for what it's worth, Myth's approach seems very fair. I earned lots of free rolls in my time, as well as tons of the premium currency to purchase more rolls with.
Still, as with most free-to-play gacha games, the end goal of Myth: Gods of Asgard is really to just endlessly work away at boosting your overall character power. Over the course of a week of play, I got my power up to 500,000, but there are other players on the in-game leaderboards who already have over five times that. I don't mind being behind the curve personally, but if that bothers you, be warned.
Aside from the questionable gacha elements and some extremely laughable voice acting, Myth: Gods of Asgard is definitely a better experience than I expected going in. Sure, it can't quite reach the highs of Hades, but for something you can play for free on your phone, it'll scratch a similar itch.
